What is dictionary?
A dictionary is a book which gives the meaning of words Or a reference book that contains alphabetically ordered words, with explanations of their meanings, often with information about grammar, pronunciation, and etymology.
Characteristics of a good dictionary
-It should provide clear meanings
-It should show the pronunciation of words
-It should give more examples
-It shows the words which mean the opposite (Antonyms)
-It shows how words are used
-It shows how words are formed
-It shows words of the same meaning (synonyms)
-It shows the classes of words (verb, nouns etc.)
Key terms found in the dictionary
A: Entries-Are all information that are found in a dictionary
B: Headword-is the word or vocabulary where by other information are all about.
C: Guideword-Is the word which is written on a top of the page of the dictionary to guide the reader(s) to find a word.
