LETS TALK ABOUT NOUNS (PART 3)
(A) PROPER NOUNS
These are names of things, people and places with unique reference. It means that these names exist alone or in only one thing.
For examples:
Ø People: Hamis, Mwakilema, Mwapinga, Kinyange, Zena. Etc.
Ø Things: Moon, Sun, World, etc
Ø Places: Bitale, Buhigwe, Mwanza, Iringa etc.
(B) COMMON NOUNS
These are groups of names of people, things, liquids and places which are ordinary/normal.
For example:
Ø Boys, Girls, Women, Men etc
Ø Things: Table, Doors, Chair, Cow etc
Ø Liquids: Water, Oil, etc.
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN PROPER NOUNS AND COMMON NOUNS
1. Proper nouns are not used with articles while common nouns are used with articles.
For example: {A Bitale*, The John*} Proper nouns
But. A cow, An onion, The table all of these forms are allowed because articles have been used with common nouns.
2. Proper nouns do not allow plural forms while common nouns allow.
For example: Mwanza*, Ahmad*, Foviruki*} proper nouns but
Boys, cows, doors, sticks} Common Nouns.
3. Proper nouns use the capital letter when it is written while common nouns do not use.
For example: jemes* = Jemes, baba* = Baba} Proper nouns
army, tax, life } Common nouns
